These Brides' Harlem Renaissance-Inspired Garden-Party Wedding Was Filled With Love and Tradition

Gambar
Zhaleh and Erica first met online in 2012. Six years later in 2018, they tied the knot in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Brooklyn, NY. Their wedding theme imagined if Zora Neale Hurston (author, anthropologist, and filmmaker whose works centered on the Black American experience) and Forough Farrokhzad (feminist Iranian poet) threw a garden party with a "sophisticated Harlem Renaissance parlour feel." "For our guests, our wedding was a lot of 'firsts' . . . This is a memory that we cherish because this is how we live our lives every day, so it was very special to witness our loved ones experience this, too." This wedding was filled with thoughtful details and traditions, as it was important to Zhaleh and Erica for the day to incorporate their personal values and represent their cultural backgrounds. For instance, Zhaleh's sister and aunties set up a sofreh aghd (a wedding table spread), a tradition of Iranian wedding ceremonies. They also had guests part

Kate Middleton Wore the Perfect Floral Dress to Garden at a Children's Hospice

Gambar
As the royal family is resuming in-person engagements, Kate Middleton made her second public appearance since the coronavirus pandemic. In honor of Children's Hospice Week, the Duchess of Cambridge joined families from East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) to plant a garden at The Nook in Norwich, one of the charity's three locations. Dressed for the occasion, Kate wore a floral midi dress from the sustainable label Faithfull The Brand ($189, net-a-porter.com). Featuring puff sleeves and a pastel palette, it's the perfect summer staple. She accessorized with woven wedges, a pair of gold earrings, and her sapphire engagement ring. Despite her proper appearance, Kate wasn't afraid to get messy while potting her own flowers (geraniums, hydrangeas) and herbs (lavender, bay, rosemary) that she sourced during her trip to Fakenham Garden Centre last week. "She didn't need the gardening gloves we offered her," EACH's director of care, Tracy Rennie,

Scrappy Chef: How does my garden grow?

Gambar
I put my plants on the counter to buy and asked the clerk if they had a discount for "Approaching Death". He looked at his co-worker behind the counter and looked back at me and said "We have a Senior Discount". I don't think he really knew what I meant. I do have a weird sense of humor, always looking at things differently. The look in his eyes made me think he thought that this poor little women standing in the front of him must be inflicted with some kind of illness! His demeanor changed and he straightened up and said "We have a senior discount! If that's what you're asking for!" I'm thinking I missed the boat on that joke. He looked confused and we had an awkward moment of silence and then I said to him, "The plants…the plant's approaching death!, not mine". His rebuttal included the fact that he guaranteed the plants were healthy and sure to grow so, he could not give me an "Approaching Death" discount at t

‘Flamazing Flamingos’ are flocking through the Norfolk Botanical Garden

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — More than 70 Flamazing Flamingos are parading through the Norfolk Botanical Garden this week. The topiary flamingo exhibit is located throughout the Garden and allows visitors to see exactly what is involved in the care of topiary plants. "A topiary is defined as the art or practice of clipping shrubs or trees into ornamental shapes. The flamingo topiary frames are built from welded tubular steel and will have six different poses and dimensions. Each frame will be filled with pink begonias and all sculpted faces will be repainted for optimal display," said Garden officials. "Each frame will contain around 80 plants and will be planted upon arrival at the Garden. The upkeep on these topiaries is fairly labor-intensive including hand watering daily, fertilizing once a week, trimming every 3 to 4 weeks, and checking the moss on each topiary on a weekly basis," staff cont

In the comedian's latest political artwork, a rather spineless — and body-less — McConnell, the Republican senator for Kentucky and the Senate Majority Leader, appears in the line of a mower wearing a University of Kentucky sweatshirt. "It's comin' Mitch! Soon all greedy garden pests and political invertebrates will be mowed down. Your Senatorial infestation ends in 2020," Carrey captioned his illustration with. N.J. bar has outdoor dining license revoked after beer garden packed with people

Gambar
The same week it reopened for business, one Morristown bar was shuttered again, after officials say they failed to follow new coronavirus regulations on outdoor dining. Tashmoo Bar & Restaurant had its outdoor dining license revoked after overcrowding on Friday night, Morristown officials said in a statement. Business administrator Jillian Barrick confirmed that Tashmoo is the only bar to have had its permit revoked in Morristown since outdoor dining reopened on Monday. An owner for Tashmoo could not be reached for comment on Sunday. "Many of our established restaurants and retailers have worked hard to pivot their business model to comply with the state regulations and ensure the health of their patrons," the township said in a statement. "Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to the contrary, not all businesses followed the guidelines and we had to shut them down." The beer garden behind the bar was set to open weekly from Thursday to Sunday, with live music

Children’s Bereavement Center honors San Antonio Girl Scout for Butterfly Garden

Gambar
It was a garden created to soothe away children's pains. On Saturday, families held photos of lost loved ones as they remembered them with the release of 200 butterflies. The choice of a butterfly was perfect for Edmond Padier, 39, his wife Cindy, 45, and son Skylor, 6, gathered with others at the Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas. That was the symbol they associated with their 4-month-old daughter, Leandra Grace Padier, who died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome on Sept. 12, 2012. They have had private moments at her grave at Sunset Memorial Garden, but Cindy Padier said being with others who could relate to what they were feeling erased a bit of the pain. The event was especially poignant for Edmond Padier who carries his daughter with him everyday: Her fac

Rochester Garden Club Awards Two College Scholarships

Gambar
One of the missions of the Rochester Garden Club is to promote environmental education, and a primary method to fulfill that mission is the annual awarding of two $1500 college scholarships to high school seniors who are graduating from the Rochester Community Schools. The club members take great pride and joy in helping these students pursue their goals to learn how to improve our environment. This year the winners are Bryce Gamage from Stoney Creek High School, and Delaney Marino from Rochester High School. Bryce grew up learning how to kayak and began appreciating the beauty and complexity of nature from the banks of Michigan rivers. This exposure showed him the importance of protecting natural resources for everyone. When Bryce signed up for an Advanced Placement Environmental Science class taught by Mr. Wilson at Stoney Creek High, he realized that the study of environmental science would be key to his goals. Mr. Wilson's passion for teaching this subject inspired Bryce to pu

Vegetable garden needs deep watering

Gambar
Q: How often should I be watering my vegetable garden? Answer: The frequency and amount of water your vegetable garden will need is going to depend on the weather conditions we are having. It is usually very hot during late June, into July and August, so the general rule of 1 inch of water a week may not be enough. The best way to tell if your plants are receiving enough water is to take a trowel or shovel and dig down a few inches after you have watered or after a rain. The soil should be moist at least 3 to 3 to 4 inches deep to ensure that the water is reaching the root zone of the plants. The primary rule of summer watering is to water thoroughly and deeply each time and to allow the soil to dry out a bit between watering. Deep watering will allow the plant's roots to grow deeper as well as the added benefit of anchoring the plant better into the ground. Light surface watering actually wastes water, because the water never reaches the root zone

Meghan Markle did something 'astonishing' at her first garden party at Buckingham Palace

Gambar
Meghan Markle's rift with the royal family began right after her wedding with Prince Harry, according to Lady Colin Campbell's latest tome, Meghan and Harry: The Real Story. "I knew the tremendous amount of hope the Royal Family invested in Meghan being a success," Campbell, 70, revealed to The Daily Star. "Hundreds of millions of people of colour were rooting for Meghan, I was rooting for Meghan, being a Jamaican, I was emotionally invested in Meghan's success. Virtually everybody I know, including my Royal friends, the wider aristocracy, wanted Meghan to be a success. But it quickly became apparent the ride may not be as smooth as everybody had hoped it would be, and it would not be as quite as positive as everybody had hoped it would be." As revealed by Lady Campbell, Meghan did something that allegedly "astonished" an attendee with "impeccable palace connections" during a royal event wherein Prince Charles' 70th

Fort Missoula garden educates community on native species

Gambar
Hewston worked by herself on Friday but said volunteers are always welcome whether they're a seasoned gardener or someone just looking to spend some time outside. In addition to weeding, volunteers have helped thin golden currant, snowberry and chokecherry — which are native plants. "We've got an abundance of chokecherry and golden currant, and if we let it, it will swarm this garden, which is exciting but then we lose a lot of other species," Hewston said. After thinning the chokecherry, Hewston pulled some with roots for a regular volunteer to take home and plant in his garden. The garden also contains other native species such as yarrow, figwort and a larch tree with baby pine cones and a hummingbird that likes to perch at the very top. Another pasture contains numerous milkweed plants, which Monarch butterflies need to survive. Hewston said a group that visited the other day found seven Monarch eggs "which is a big deal because we're right on the verge of

Landscape designer Piet Oudolf on finding solace in the garden

Gambar
Jeffrey Brown: The world has looked strange these past months, familiar places no longer familiar at all. Last year, we visited Amsterdam's world-famous Rijksmuseum, normally a busy crossroads, now a few bikes forced to keep their distance. One of the park-like spaces Piet Oudolf designed, Chicago's Lurie Garden, remains closed. The plants still need tending, the spring bulbs prepared for next year's bloom. Many people have turned to their own or community gardens during this period, growing vegetables and flowers, nourishing body and soul. Gardening centers have been among the first essential businesses to reopen. Sales of seeds have soared. Piet Oudolf isn't surprised. Landscape designer Piet Oudolf on finding solace in the garden

In the garden: Train your plants to be less thirsty

Gambar
With all the talk of drought, it's no harm to be aware of some preventive measures and strategies that you can use to help the plants in your garden survive. These strategies are built on an understanding of how plants use water and why. asically, water is part of the growth process, its hydrogen molecule combining with carbon dioxide to make carbohydrates. Just as carbs are the fuel for human consumption, they are the fuel that drives growth and keeps plants alive during the winter when growth is next to impossible. In fact, we humans actually eat the carbohydrates that plants lay down for winter use. As well as water's importance in the growth process, plants also use it to cool down in hot weather, thus avoiding the likelihood of sun scald. Outdoors, plants dep

Lukas Nelson and his band find the real on ‘Naked Garden’

Gambar
Despite canceling his tour dates for the rest of the year due to COVID-19, singer-songwriter Lukas Nelson — the eldest son of country legend Willie Nelson — is keeping things real and staying connected with his fans by playing short live streams Tuesdays and Thursdays on social media dubbed Quarantunes Evening Session. Keeping things real is in Nelson's nature. When it came time to naming his band a dozen years ago, he didn't have to search too long to find the perfect moniker. He turned to his mentor Neil Young, specifically his song "Walk On" from the singer's 1974 album "On the Beach." There's a line in the song that goes, "Some get stoned, some get strange. But sooner or later it all gets real." It inspired the name Promise of the Real and reinforced the advice Nelson had heard from his father and others: "Keep your head down, work hard. Stay present, breathe and exercise. Stay true to the muse." "It's a pre
