Owners of Burleson Yard Beer Garden set to open large dog-friendly bar this May on Northeast Side

What used to be a massive restaurant on the city's Northeast Side near the front gates of McAllister Park has been transformed into a dog-friendly bar that will feature patio games, a playground and legendary margaritas from a San Antonio favorite.

The owners of Taco Garage and Burleson Yard Beer Garden have taken over what was formerly known as Ruben's Backyard, which closed in January, to open its new business venture, Hops & Hounds.

Joshua Giles, general manager at Burleson and now Hops & Hounds, told mySA.com the new spot was scheduled to be up and running by April, however, the coronavirus pandemic halted those plans as dine-in restaurants and bars were temporarily closed by local and state officials in March.

With Gov. Greg Abbott's new executive order that is slowly reviving the Texas economy, Giles hopes to open the bar by May 18, but added the date could be pushed back if circumstances surrounding the pandemic change.

Hops & Hounds will feature a dine-in restaurant, an indoor and patio bar, a children's playground and a dog run at its nearly one-acre location at 13838 Jones Maltsberger Rd. The dog run is a separate gated area that will have ramps and other obstacles for the furry ones to play on, Giles said.

On its food menu, the bar will have classic American items such as burgers, fries and chicken tenders. As for the drinks, the bar will highlight some of its customer-favorite cocktails and margaritas that are currently sold at both Burleson and Taco Garage.

The bar will also have patio games such as ping pong and cornhole along with live music two days out of the week, Giles said.

"The facility is pretty large," Giles said. "It's probably almost as big as Burleson. The place is so big that we can offer all kinds of activities for everybody ... We are excited to be a part of this neighborhood and look forward to serving everyone soon."
