Bärchen Restaurant and Beer Garden plans Blackstone location

Rose and Crown Pub, 515 S. 20th St. The shade of the tall tree that acts like a natural umbrella over the patio at Rose and Crown Pub, an otherwise completely unremarkable dive bar. Their patio is like one of those hidden gems I feel glad to know about. It's obscured completely from the street view by a big, tall wooden fence, which makes it feel secretive and cozy, and the beer is cheap, too. Check it out in the spring, and I don't think you'll be sorry. Interview With Bärchen Beer Garden | Project 402 #009

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer) Three days after the Bruins announced a $1.5 million fund for arena workers, contingent on the final six Bruins home games being canceled, TD Garden has started to make staffing cuts. Ushers were informed on Tuesday afternoon they were being laid off. A letter sent to ushers and obtained by the Herald was titled "Operational Impact of Coronavirus," and said workers "will not be scheduled until the conditions at our unit allows us to resume normal operations. As this situation is rapidly evolving, we will continue to update you with the anticipated date that we will resume business. We hope to provi

Garden activist called for revolution

Gambar
Revival, social justice and defiant compassion marked the pleas of Benjamin Vogt, owner of Monarch Gardens, a prairie-inspired garden design firm in Lincoln, Neb. Last month during Lewis Ginter's Winter Symposium in Richmond, Vogt passionately advocated for the voiceless: plants and their extended communities around the globe. "The greatest injustice of our time may be the eradication of native ecosystems, the erasure of life forms and the capacity for one species [humans] to ignore those injustices," Vogt said. In his book "A New Garden Ethic," Vogt challenged gardeners, horticulturists and designers to revolutionize their approach to landscaping, as well as their expectations for the garden. "What we honor now in our landscapes is what will give life to future generations of humans, plants and animals," Vogt stated. He urged critical thinking on an expanded scale before planting more grass, deforesting mo

Over the Garden Fence: Coronavirus can't cancel spring

Gambar
© Submitted Using collected items from around home, Earth, Wind and Flowers Garden Club member Janet Nance shows that the hope of gardening has not been canceled. Spring has not been canceled. In this time of caution, as events get canceled and social distancing is in vogue, I am grateful that there are still items in local stores to help soothe our souls. I stayed out of the melee over toilet tissue last week and opted for some Easter candy. Retreat mode is still in place. Curiosity got the best of me. The television broadcasts and Facebook postings were offering sharp contrasts in their views. "We're in deep trouble" versus "listening to music hasn't been canceled." After three days, the birds had been fed, the workbench in the garage had been cleared with all nails and screws sorted. Food supplies were still in good shape with perch, venison, corn and berries in the freezer. As I think "pe

Coronavirus: Panic buying of vegetable seedlings at garden centres

First it was supermarkets being cleaned out of toilet paper and hand sanitiser, but now it seems spooked shoppers have home-grown vegetables in their sights. Garden centres say seedling sales have gone through the roof while nurseries are scrambling to meet demand. GardenBarn in Masterton sold out of seedlings on Wednesday. Located near New Plymouth and Waitara, Big Jim's Garden Centre manager Chantel Bell said the last week had been bedlam. "Veggie seedlings are flying out the door. We have doubled what we would normally order so we order twice a week but we are doubling what comes through the door in regards to veggie seedlings. "All bras

Daily Distraction: Too early to dig, but not to dream of your garden

Gambar
As we stay home to try to help contain the spread of COVID-19, we're offering a "Daily Distraction" — ideas to help you stay home and stay safe. Though all we can do is look at the yard and garden these days (and maybe some of that will be under snow in the next few days … sigh), it's never too early to dream. Julie Weisenhorn, a University of Minnesota Extension educator and associate Extension professor, says you can map out your garden. "Take measurements and draw your garden bed on graph paper. Lay out your planting based on the recommended spacing for your plants. Think about succession planting where you plant a new crop as another crop finishes. Vegetables: extension.umn.edu/find-plants/vegetables. "Choose plants that you really love eating, growing, smelling, tasting. Remember to plant for our all-important pollinators, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife you want to attract." Flowers for special uses: extension.umn.edu/find-plants/flow

Meteorologically speaking, a fine afternoon in the Rose Garden

That was three degrees warmer than the year's previous high, the 74 degrees reached on Monday. It was breezy, and a bit cloudy, but it was bright enough. So it might have been said that if it was necessary to declare a national emergency, Friday was, meteorologically speaking, a nice day for it. Bright, breezy autumn weather forecast for Tuesday

The Latest: 2 Madison Square Garden boxing cards called off

Gambar
The Latest on the coronavirus outbreak's affect on sports around the globe (all times EDT): 10 p.m. Two boxing cards at Madison Square Garden have been called off because of the coronavirus outbreak. A few hours after announcing the fights would proceed without crowds, promoter Bob Arum said Thursday they are off because there was no way to test the fighters themselves for the virus. Arum's Top Rank company had planned to show off two of its young cards, with Shakur Stevenson defending his featherweight title on Saturday in an ESPN fight and Ireland's Michael Conlan fighting on St. Patrick's Day on the ESPN+ streaming service. "We thought we had solved the problem by saying no audience, but then the question became whether any of the fighters had the virus,' Arum said. "There was no way to get testing for them so we agreed with the New York Athletic Commission that the fights would be called off.' Unlike most sports organizations, the UFC i

Auckland family 'shocked' at 11-foot flower in garden

Gambar
A family on Auckland's North Shore thinks they may be eligible for a Guinness World Record after an 11-foot flower bloomed in their backyard. The mysterious plant sat in the garden for years but has only recently started thriving amid Auckland's drought-like conditions. Annmaree Foy-Turner said the plant came with the house when they bought it about six years ago. "We're both green fingers and we love our gardening - myself and my husband - and I thought 'oh yea just another desert-looking plant ... I'll keep that there'. Over the years we just watered it now and then," she said. "Lately, with this humid hot weather ... the bad drought we've had in New Zealand, all of a sudden out of nowhere four weeks ago this flower started producing," she said, thinking it was strange. "It started off with a metre, over the last four weeks, every day we go out there and measure it and it seems to grow a couple of more inches and I

On Tuesday, the Green Wave earned a trip back to the state championship game with a 67-51 win over Snowden at the TD Garden in the Div. 4 state semifinals. "We returned four starters and we expected to get back here," said Abington junior Matt Maguire. Abington will play either Hopedale or Drury in the state final on Saturday (time and location to be determined). Like Maguire, the Green Wave trudged through a sluggish first half but still were ahead 22-16 at the break. Maguire, who had 6 points in the first half, exploded for 14 points in the third quarter. He scored 9 points during a 16-4 third-quarter run that saw

Joe Sax Boston Dazzles TD Garden Crowds With Vivacious Musical Energy

Gambar
When exiting TD Garden from the East entrance of North Station after a Bruins or Celtics game, fans can hear the sweet sounds of musical magic booming from the golden saxophone of Joe Sparkes. Also known as Joe Sax Boston, Sparkes has played outside of the Garden after most Bruins or Celtics games and also concerts since 2017. He has slowly become part of the experience of attending a Garden event because of his vivacious and effervescent performances following events. "Those fans come out and they're so passionate," Sparkes told NESN. "No matter if they win or they lose, it's always an exciting, fun time. They respond to music and I respond to their energy." Sparkes has also developed a relationship with some of the Bruins players because of his consistent presence outside of the Garden. "I'm on waving terms with all of them at this point. A few times they'll stop and say something or throw me a tip or something like that.&

Arlington locks up a return trip to Garden for Super 8 final

Gambar
FRAMINGHAM — Arlington jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period of its third-round Super 8 showdown against Pope Francis Saturday night. And thanks to a superb 28-save performance from senior Nathan Brennan, the Spy Ponders held on to pull out a 2-1 victory at Loring Arena, earning a trip back to the MIAA Division 1A final at TD Garden for the first time since its 2017 title. Pope Francis (15-5-2), which has advanced to the final each of the past two seasons, will play the winner of St. John's Prep/BC High for the right to face Arlington back in the final a week from Sunday. Brendan Jones put the Spy Ponders (19-1-2) on the board at 6:55, then Ryan Davies doubled up on the power play at 8:09 to give Arlington the start it needed. Arlington hunkered down in front of Brennan to deny the Cardinals space from there. Ben Zaranek made 19 saves for Pope Francis. "Nate was the difference for us, for sure," Arlington coach John Messuri said. "He was our MVP by a long

The Secret Garden Trailer Unlocks the Magic of the Imagination

Gambar
STX Films has released a new trailer for The Secret Garden. This serves as an adaptation of the classic novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This is a book that has been adapted several times in the past. To freshen things up a bit, the filmmakers behind this particular adaptation, which include Harry Potter producer David Heyman, have decided to bring it into a new setting. Specifically, the 1940s. To add a little prestige, they've also added Oscar-winner Colin Firth in a leading role. This trailer aims to make a case for the new take. The trailer kicks off by showing us an orphan girl who is sent away to live with her uncle in a large manor. Unfortunately, her uncle, at least at first, doesn't seem to be the most welcoming gentleman. She soon discovers the infamous secret garden and things get whimsical. There are grand music cues, adventure, lush imagery and an overall fantastical feel. It certainly seems to be attempting to capture more of a Peter Pan vibe,

Evansville Olive Garden manager accused of discrimination no longer works there: Corporate

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The manager at an Evansville Olive Garden accused of racial discrimination no longer works for the restaurant, according to a statement from the company. "We have zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind, and the manager involved no longer works for our company," an emailed statement read. Earlier Monday, corporate leadership confirmed they were investigating after two black employees said they faced discrimination at the restaurant chain's Evansville location.  During the Saturday night dinner rush, a female customer seated with a black server reportedly requested a white server instead, a demand to which managers reportedly acquiesced.  Olive Garden host Amira Donahue, who is black, said the woman a

Rip out the grass or, at the very least, quit watering it. If you have ample space to work with, don't try to fill it all up with greenery -- drought will make it tough to keep everything alive. Xeriscaping is an effective solution for drought-ridden regions and involves choosing native, drought-resistant plants and creating a landscape that requires very little water if any at all. Ideas, inspiration abounded at Home and Garden Show

Becky Williamson sometimes navigated the Fort Wayne Home & Garden Show over the weekend by avoiding the expo floor. Lined by hundreds of vendors, the aisles seemed designed for big crowds wanting to browse – not for the show's producer needing to get somewhere quick. The four-day event typically draws 40,000 to 45,000 people to Memorial Coliseum, and this year Williamson expects the final tally for its 47th year will be on the higher end, she said in the show's final hours Sunday. She credited the bigger crowds to various factors, including a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne and an entertainment lineup featuring such fan favorites as "grillologists" Mad Dog and Merrill and antique appraiser Lori Verderame. With more than 650 vendors to explore, Williamson said, thorough attendees could spend hours at the show her grandfather started. Williamson likes carrying on the family tradition, she said before describing the enjoyment s
